300 miles to Graceland

Saturday, January 5, 2013

As I mentioned in a previous post found here, I've been traveling with the Mr to North Mississippi for four years now. And each year, we try to add a little something new to our visit. Last year, we met up with our old Meridian friend LB... this year, I wanted to see Graceland!

After a full day of visiting with family on Saturday, we got up Sunday morning ready to go. I was pretty excited, I mean Elvis was long gone before I was born, but I do know his music. Who doesn't, right?! The drive from the hotel to the parking for Graceland was quick. But we realized even quicker that everyone else had the same idea that we did.

We paid our $10 to park, passed the Heartbreak Hotel, and got out of the vehicle with camera in hand ready to capture all that Graceland had to offer.

On our walk to the ticket house, we realized a couple of things:

1) It was FREEZING cold!
2) There were a lot of Iowa fans
3) The line was backed up waaaaay past the ticket house.

We had only been standing there for a few minutes (and the line still hadn't moved) when I saw an employee and stopped him to ask a few questions. The first question of course was... "how long would we be standing in this line." His response... HE LAUGHED! Yep... laughed! He said it would be another 45 minutes before we got our tickets (which included standing outside in the cold), once we got the tickets another hour to hour and a half before we loaded a bus to take us to the mansion, and then an hour and a half tour.

Needless to say, the Mr and I looked at each other and said.... NOT TODAY! The employee said next time we need to purchase tickets online, in advance. So there's always next year's trip! Ha!

I didn't bring my big zoom (obviously because I thought we would be up close and personal) so this was the best shot of the house I could get.

On our way back to the vehicle, we stopped and at least got a picture with the sign. Of course, I asked a family to take our picture and their little boy (maybe 7) said I'll take it... should have known better!

Yep, it's out of focus. OH well, there's always next year, right?!

On our way back to our Sweet Home Alabama, we stopped in Southaven to grab a bite to eat.

My favorite part of the meal, the baked potato soup! Pretty sure you'd never hear me ever say this, but it puts O'Charley's soup to shame. Gasp!!

And since the Mr said I owed him BIG TIME for going to Graceland, and especially since we paid $10 and left within 10 minutes, we stopped back by Bass Pro for some shopping before we made it home.

Have y'all ever been to Graceland? Is it worth our time, and money to try again next year?! We've got a little under 12 months to find out!

  3. Joy! Way to preplan for next year! I lived in Southavrn for a few years. It was always a tradition at Christmas for my sisters and me to get Krispy Kreme donuts and drive by Graceland to look at the lights. We would get out and sign our names on the wall and take a dozen crazy pics! I've never inside Graceland, but have been to Graceland Two in Holly Springs a few times. Also, Huey's is one oft favorite places to eat! Their food is always good!

Hope you are doing well! Have a great rest of the weekend!
