the Sowell life's Friday five...

1) {Nursery Preview} We are slowly but surely getting little AC's nursery ready for her arrival. Even though she won't be sleeping in there for a few months once we bring her home. I'm excited that her crib is ready to go, complete with her custom painting above it.

2) {A Little Baking} So, we ran out of Reese's Peanut Butter Hearts on Monday morning. Tragic, I know. The Mr was heading to the grocery store after work, but I started my chocolate and peanut butter craving before he got home. I just happened to have peanut butter cookie dough in the fridge and a package of Hershey Kisses in the pantry. Craving satisfied. BTW, these took 12 minutes total to make.

3) {Snowy Delivery} The weather started getting rough Tuesday right before noon, and our postal service lady managed to make it to our door to deliver a package. It was something the Mr wanted for our little girl. You know, warm wipes!!

4) {A Winter Wonderland} Once the snow started falling Tuesday morning, it pretty much didn't stop or let up until around 3:30 that afternoon. This was the first time I've seen our home covered in snow. I actually didn't walk out in it, but I did snap a picture of the backyard from the back door window, and had the Mr take our camera to the street to take a photo of the front of the house when he got home from work.

5) {Bump Update} Sorry y'all... no picture for this week. Why? Because I haven't put any clothes besides my lounge pants and shirts that barely cover my belly anymore. Also, makeup and fixing my hair has been the last thing on my mind. So... I am sparing y'all the actual picture and just leaving you with that visual. However, I think we are getting out to go grocery shopping Saturday, so stay tuned to instagram and you might get a peek at the ever growing belly.

Alabama's Winter Weather — my point of view

Thursday, January 30, 2014

Monday morning I started wondering what this winter weather would actually be like come Tuesday morning. I'm a Good Morning Alabama watcher (ABC station), and I usually get my weather from Charles Daniel on TV or from twitter. The forecast really hadn't changed much, so I asked the Mr to run to the grocery store to pick up a few things that we were needing. He did buy milk, but I needed it for a recipe that night.

***Side note: He was at the grocery store for a long time. He came home and said I was in trouble. I'm thinking oh crap, everyone must be at Publix stocking up for the winter weather. NOPE. Poor thing got behind someone using coupons. And he said, she had at least two coupons for every item. But, the best part was after she paid $3 for what was supposed to be $42... the cashier gave her two gift cards $5 each. So he said SHE GOT PAID TO BUY GROCERIES. And now, he wants me to learn these coupon tips. Anyone want to help me learn?***

Anywho, Tuesday morning comes and I'm up early with the Mr. I had been up for a few hours before he got up. (I don't sleep well in the early mornings, but you let 6:30 hit and I sleep like a baby til 8! Darby says the baby is training me for what's to come. I guess we will see soon!) So I'm watching the news, and catching up on social media. I see Charles Daniel's tweet, "Good Morning Alabama!! It's Snow Day...", and I respond....

Now, at this point it was before 5 am. And the snow didn't even start falling here until after 8:30. My parents were supposed to come that morning. Dad had a meeting and mom was going to help me finish up in the nursery with washing clothes and organizing. They asked me what it was doing here and I said, well, we have snow flurries, but that's it. They had sleet and snow at their house, but they started on their journey here. Mom starts sending me pictures of their commute and I kept telling them, oh it's nothing like that here.

Well, the Mr called me around 10:30 and said he was stuck in traffic in Bessemer. He said that vehicles were spinning and it was getting crazy out there. I immediately felt bad because I had told my parents that it wasn't like there here. And a few minutes later I get a text from mom saying they were half way here, but turning around because it was getting too bad, and dad's meeting was canceled. So that meant seeing this little cutie (who was in snuggled up in their backseat) was out of the question.

The Mr said he was going to start his way bad to our area, but he had to make one more stop to get some paperwork signed with a customer. It took him almost two hours to go a mile and a half. And once he got back on the road, he called me to tell me he was coming straight home, but he had no clue how long it would take him because people were leaving their vehicles and walking on the interstate. And all I'm seeing from the warmth of our home is beautiful snow falling from looking out the window.  Mom sent me a text telling me they made it back home at 2:30. That same time the Mr pulls in the driveway. I was so happy to see him. But then he starts telling me all the scenes he saw coming home and I realized how lucky I was to have him home.

We didn't start watching the news until a few hours after he got home. I guess I really wasn't prepared to see and hear what we were watching. We had friends who had to leave their toddlers at daycare overnight because they couldn't get to them. And we heard of children being stuck at schools with their teachers overnight due to the same reason. People were stranded on the highways for up to 12 hours with no food, water or bathrooms. Crazy and scary at the same time!

Our experience with the snow/ice wasn't a bad one. Although I know it could have been much worse. I'm so thankful I had my husband home with me, and that my parents made it back to their house safely. I loved (and am still loving) the snowy scene here at our home. The snow will melt later today, but it's been beautiful.

Unfortunately people are starting to but blame on the weather and media folks. There is no one to blame. This is called mother nature, and it can take a turn for the better or worse at any moment. Were there bad calls made? Sure. Schools should have canceled classes for the day, but they did what they thought was right at the time. We aren't used to this kind of weather. We might get snow once a year, and it usually is a "dusting." And, it usually melts just as soon as it stops snowing. This was a different situation. No one really knew this was going to have an outcome like it did. But, we live and we learn.

However, good came out of this. Folks were helping their neighbors, and even strangers. Southern hospitality doesn't stop even in a snow storm y'all!

the Sowell life's Friday five...

1) {Shower of Blessings} We started the week off with a sweet baby shower for AC. And that shower has been the theme of the week for me.

2) {Packed Out} We managed to get home with all the gifts from the shower. The Mr couldn't see out the back of the SUV, but who needs to see out the back anyway, right?!

3) {A Packed Nursery} When we got home, the Mr put all the gifts in AC's nursery. I stayed off my feet to get the swelling down from traveling and to not get in trouble with the Dr. So I didn't get in her room to start going through all the gifts until Thursday. A bit overwhelming!

4) {Shoes, OH SHOES} It's official... AC has cuter shoes than I do! As a matter of fact, I think she now has more shoes than her mommy! Check out these adorable shoes!

5) {Bump Update} We had our 32 1/2 week Dr appt on Wednesday. And at our next appt we get to see our little girl and see how big she is now. One thing is for sure... mommy is getting bigger!

AC's Baby Shower

Wednesday, January 22, 2014

Sitting here thinking back to the day we found out we were indeed pregnant, it seems like yesterday. However, July 1st was technically a long time ago. We're 32 and a half weeks today, and I'm so thankful for each and every experience we have had (and will have) during this pregnancy.

One of many favorite memories from this pregnancy will be our baby shower this past weekend.

And before I go any further, I have to thank Sheila for taking my camera and making all these pictures. It was nice not having to worry about remembering our special day because I knew she would capture everything we wanted! She also made the sign above!!

These sweet ladies, along with Sheila and Vanessa, hosted our sweet baby shower. I've known almost all of them all my life. They've been a huge influence in my life as I was growing up and even now, today. So thankful for their love and support!

This was our only shower for little AC, so I was excited to have the Mr right beside me enjoying our day.

We had so many family and friends come to shower us with gifts. We even had gifts from Houston, TX and Norfolk, VA shipped to the shower! And, a sweet friend and her family drove the two and a half hours from Bham to be there with us!!

Little AC got lots of cute clothes, and SHOES. Y'all, she got so many cute shoes! I can't wait to see them on her. We were so excited to see lots of diapers, wipes, and butt paste. Cause you know we will be going through those quickly!

We are so thankful for each and every sweet gift our baby girl received. We managed to get home with all of the gifts in our SUV. However, the Mr couldn't see anything out the back window.

And even little MB gave her little sister a gift...

All the food and the decor were perfect. We loved everything our hostesses did for our baby shower.

We are so thankful for each and everyone who came to shower our baby girl with love.

the Sowell life's Friday five...

1) {Homemade Cooking} I love to cook, but these days standing in the kitchen for over an hour preparing food is not fun. I'm getting tired more easily and I also have a good bit of pain in my hips if I stand up for about an hour. So, even though we love homemade lasagna, I don't imagine we will have it again until after AC comes. But it was delicious!!!

2) {Hello MB} We got a sweet visit from our little Marsie Belle this week. We love having her here because she always gives us something to laugh at. Check out these cute faces!

3) {Just a little scared} Marsie Belle hates, and I do mean HATES when a smoke alarm goes off whether in person or on TV. Well, now anything that remotely sounds like it, she gets upset. And Wednesday night, she heard something on TV and we had to grab her to keep her from going to get under a bed. Mom said she was shaking for about 20 minutes while she was holding her. Poor baby!!

4) {American Idol} It's back, but the initial shows in the beginning are not as funny as they have been in the past. They usually show a lot more of the "bad" talent, which is what we love to laugh at. Of course, Harry is making the show a little more funnier. However, he seems to think only one or two are good enough to make it to the next round. Ha!

5) {Hair Cut} It's been a while since I had a hair cut. Actually it's been since September! Yeah, waaay too long. So I had about two inches chopped off yesterday at the salon. It looks healthy again, and it doesn't weigh a ton! Still have the grays... I haven't had them colored since June. But, I'm thinking they will get a dye job the last week of Feb so little AC will see her mama without the gray when she arrives. We have another ultrasound at 35 weeks... and that will determine when I plan to set up my appt.

Wordless Wednesday

Weekend, where did you go?

Monday, January 13, 2014

I love a weekend with my husband, even if it is a weekend that we have something planned just about every minute of every day.

Friday afternoon, I was having some major pregnancy cravings. I'm talking no amount of other food could help out this craving, believe me I tried. I sent the Mr a text...

And I learned when he walked in the door empty handed that he thought I was joking. He even asked if I had the stuff in the house to make chocolate cake and red velvet cupcakes. Ummmm NO! Trust me, he has since learned that I was NOT joking and he said he would not be taking these texts lightly over the coming weeks.

The next best thing since I couldn't have my cravings was a plate of comfort food. Fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. Pregnant or not, this will always be my favorite dinner!

We ended up in the bed early because I had an early class the next morning. Yes, breastfeeding class. It was a learning experience for sure, of course I have no idea if I will remember everything she said when that time comes. But, she said not to worry about it because they are there to help if we ask for it, and gave us their hotline number to call day or night. They may regret that come March! Ha!

Saturday at lunch we met our friends Stephanie and Tadd for lunch at Baumhowers. It was great to catch up and have a lot of laughs. They went to the BCS bowl in California and told us all about their adventures in Beverly Hills and at Disneyland, too.

I got a text from Babies R Us and they were having a demonstration for the Tommee Tippee diaper disposal we registered for. This was something the Mr really wanted us to register for, so we went to see exactly how it works. And needless to say, even if we don't get it at our shower, we will still be purchasing it. No stinky diapers the Mr says!

Afterwards, we went to Sams to take care of my pregnancy cravings from the day before.

I'm now a happy camper!

While we were at Babies R Us, we picked up some organizing bins for AC's room. Yep, it's time to get her room ready. Two months or less before we meet our little girl. So my question is... we need two more bins, but should I do the bottom row like the middle row: polka dots, beige, polka dots or beige, polka dots, beige? Need your help here...

The rest of the weekend was spent trying to do stuff we've been trying to do for months. Organizing the garage, taking care of the leaves, putting up the rest of the Christmas decorations, etc.

How was your weekend?

Advice — Hospital Bag

Sunday, January 12, 2014

At our childbirth class, we were told to have our hospital bag ready by week 32. And y'all, that's next week! But, before I even start to get a bag together, I need some advice.

What do I bring?

What to pack for the baby?

I'm hoping y'all can share some insight and helpful hints to help make sure I bring what we will need.

the Sowell life

the Sowell life's Friday five...

1) {Hello Winter Weather} The weather Monday and Tuesday was a little, um, cold. The Mr told me to stay indoors which was no problem because this pregnant girl doesn't have any clothes that are warm enough that fit. Of course on Tuesday, the power went out not once, not twice, but three times. Thankfully it was fully restored before dark. I never stepped foot out of the house, but the Mr told me it was COLD. It didn't last long though, we are back in the upper 50s again.

2) {New Jewels} While we were gone for the holidays, we had our mail held. And when we got back I had a sweet package in the mail from Jessica. It's a necklace she had made for both our angel baby and little AC.

3) {Baby Bump Update} Little AC has been having the hiccups about twice a day here lately, and she's getting bigger which means momma is getting bigger, too.

4) {Tum Ta Ta Ta TUMS} These things have become a huge part of my life over the past week. I've needed them a lot during the pregnancy, but last week I kinda had a small break from them. I might have only had 5 all week. Well, this week it came back FULL FORCE. It's a good thing the Dr said they are okay for you, and eat as many as you need.

5) {Cute Accessories} I've become a huge fan of amazon.com. And I found these sweet headbands for AC on there. They arrived on Wednesday and we can't wait to see them on our little girl in March.
